BREAKING NEWS: Biden picks retired general Lloyd Austin for Pentagon chief

Retired Gen. Lloyd Austin, once viewed as a long-shot candidate to be President-elect Joe Biden's defense secretary, has been chosen to lead the Pentagon, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions.

If confirmed, Austin would be the first African American to run the Department of Defense.

Austin declined to comment through a spokesperson. A spokesperson for the Biden transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
