Good morning and welcome to Monday.

The Republican Party of Florida is busily putting together plans for a Florida Man to be inaugurated for the first time ever.

They’ll be celebrating the swearing in of President-elect DONALD TRUMP over four nights of inauguration festivities — and the fact that he has chosen to surround himself with so many of their own.

The big Florida names bound for the Trump administration include incoming chief of staff SUSIE WILES and deputy chief of staff JAMES BLAIR, as well as Cabinet picks, from Rep. MIKE WALTZ for national security adviser to PAM BONDI for attorney general and Sen. MARCO RUBIO for secretary of state.

“We are literally making America Florida here,” RPOF Executive Director BILL HELMICH told Playbook.

RPOF only does inauguration events in Washington when the GOP candidate wins, Helmich said, though he added that such events for the state party in 2017 had been much smaller.

Florida Republicans are pairing up with the Republican Party of Puerto Rico for their big events, a notable choice given the backlash that resulted after a comedian insulted the island territory at a Trump rally right before the election (which ultimately didn’t scar Trump’s electoral chances).

It’s going to be a ball — literally. RPOF has 200 hotel rooms blocked off. Tickets to batch together room stays and attend various festivities run as high as $15,000, according to a flyer viewed by Playbook.

Floridians will fly into the nation’s capital on Friday, Jan. 17 to check in. The next day they’ll gather for a breakfast at the Marriott Marquis and hear from several speakers, including Rubio and Puerto Rico Gov.-elect JENNIFFER GONZÁLEZ-COLÓN, as well as Reps. CORY MILLS, KAT CAMMACK and BYRON DONALDS.

Saturday night they’ll have a gala, again at the Marriott Marquis, which is in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of D.C. It’s about a mile from the White House (and Joe’s Stone Crab’s D.C. location), and right across from the convention center where the main presidential inauguration ball is often held.

That same night, Sen. RICK SCOTT (R-Fla.) and his wife ANN SCOTT are also hosting a black tie “Florida Sunshine Ball” for Trump, paid for by Scott’s Let’s Get to Work political committee. Scott similarly hosted a ball at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in 2017 that featured a performance from The Beach Boys. This year’s save the date, obtained by Playbook, is flanked with images of orchids, anthuriums and birds of paradise.

On inauguration eve, ticketed guests are going to be treated to a reception at Florida’s “embassy” in D.C., called the Florida House. (Florida House touts itself as the only state outpost in Washington, and it’s right across from the Supreme Court and Library of Congress.)

Then, of course, there’s the day of. Historically, it could be very cold and even snow in D.C. Not everyone is worried, though. ERIN HUNTLEY, who chairs the Orange County Republican Party that helped flip state House District 35, said her three teenage children are hoping for it.

“It's been amazing to see this campaign and election from so many angles: volunteer, chair, electoral college member and now inauguration,” she said. “Our whole family is thankful for the opportunity to see this historic election up close.”

Those who can’t make it won’t be left out. Back in Florida, Miami-Dade GOP Chair KEVIN COOPER said they’re considering having a luncheon to stream the inauguration since many people will be off work for the day, which falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

TUESDAY — Gov. RON DeSANTIS and the Cabinet are meeting via teleconference. (The agenda is here.

ASSIGNMENTS POSTED — Florida Senate President BEN ALBRITTON released committee assignments ahead of the weekend. (The full list is here.

HALF WERE IMMIGRANTS — “Florida workers died in the heat. Their deaths were kept from authorities,” by the Tampa Bay Times’ Hannah Critchfield and Juan Carlos Chavez. “Florida banned local governments from providing increased oversight for workers exposed to high temperatures earlier this year, saying businesses and federal regulators alone could keep laborers safe.

“But the Tampa Bay Times found far more workers have died from heat across the state than authorities even know. The missing deaths bring recorded heat fatalities in Florida to at least 37 over the past decade — double the number federal regulators had tallied during the same period.”

SOLUTION TO DRILLING CONCERNS? — “Florida mulls buying land that includes proposed Apalachicola River oil drilling site,” reports POLITICO’s Bruce Ritchie. “The state Acquisition and Restoration Council voted Friday to study a proposal to add to the state land-buying list 18,854 acres in four counties, including Clearwater Land & Mineral's drilling site 1.5 miles northwest of the river.

“Cameron Baxley of the Apalachicola Riverkeeper group, a conservation organization focused on the river, said Friday the proposed addition includes the drilling site, which the Department of Environmental Protection confirmed after initial publication of this story.

“Hundreds of people on Monday attended an oil drilling protest outside the DEP headquarters building as a three-day hearing began on a legal challenge to the proposed state drilling permit. But site opponents apparently were not aware that the council, meeting later in the week, would consider moves to buy the land for conservation — which could effectively kill off the proposed drilling project.”

— “Groups urge school officials to keep anatomy, other health-info-related books in school libraries,” reports Christine Sexton at the Florida Phoenix.

PENINSULA AND BEYOND

HAPPENING WEDNESDAY — “Space Florida to discuss secretive $1.8 billion Cape Canaveral launch site project,” reports Richard Tribou of the Orlando Sentinel. “Could Elon Musk and SpaceX be set to drop $1.8 billion for new launch support facilities in Cape Canaveral? Space Florida, the state’s aerospace economic development entity, isn’t saying just who wants to spend the money, but they are planning to discuss the secretive plan called ‘Project Hinton’ at a meeting this week.

“The agenda notes for Wednesday’s meeting outlined the project that will be a ‘high-volume production facility, high bay and launch infrastructure at the Cape Canaveral Spaceport.’”

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI STUDY — “Dozens of luxury condos, hotels in Miami sinking at ‘unexpected’ rates, new study reveals,” reports the Miami Herald’s Denise Hruby. “The study … identified a total of 35 buildings that have sunk by as much as three inches between 2016 and 2023, including the iconic Surf Club Towers and Faena Hotel, the Porsche Design Tower, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Trump Tower III and Trump International Beach Resorts. Together, the high rises accommodate tens of thousands of residents and tourists. Some have more than 300 units, including penthouses that cost millions of dollars.”

NEW OVERSIGHT — “Post-[Ben] Sasse, UF tightens spending policies, selects search firm for new president,” reports Jay Waagmeester of the Florida Phoenix. “Governance standards passed by UF trustees Friday now require the chair of the Board of Trustees to approve university consulting agreements of $1 million or more. The same standard applies to UF Health consulting agreements of $4 million or more.”

— “Venezuela never had so many political prisoners. Seven of them are teens,” reports The Wall Street Journal’s Juan Forero and Ryan Dubé.

TRUMPLANDIA AND THE SWAMP

ON THE SIDELINES — Trump had multiple allies surrounding him Saturday afternoon in a suite to watch the Army-Navy game, including PETE HEGSETH, his pick for Defense secretary, as well as Vice President-elect JD VANCE, House Speaker MIKE JOHNSON, Director of National Intelligence pick TULSI GABBARD and Waltz.

But out in the crowd was DeSantis, the man Trump has waiting in the wings in case Hegseth’s confirmation tanks. DeSantis took several photos with medal of honor recipients and was accompanied by his wife, Florida first lady CASEY DeSANTIS, and his son, Mason.

CAMPAIGN MODE

TUESDAY — Florida’s electors meet to select the president and vice president of the U.S.

RPOF LEADERSHIP — No other candidates have yet emerged to challenge EVAN POWER as Republican Party of Florida chair, reports Jacob Ogles of Florida Politics.

MOVING ON — KARLA HERNÁNDEZ-MATS, who has been president of the Miami-Dade teacher’s union for nine years, won’t seek another term, reports Clara-Sophia Daly of the Miami Herald. Hernandez-Mats was Democrat CHARLIE CRIST’s running mate during his unsuccessful bid for governor in 2022.

Per the Miami Herald: “Hernández-Mats’ career of advocating for teachers in Miami-Dade had many high moments, such as securing pay raises for teachers and fighting to re-certify the union amid increasingly tough requirements. But it has also been speckled with controversy; she has been the punching bag for Republicans who disagree with her policies and view her as part of the increasingly progressive left.”

SPECIAL ELECTIONS — “Trump casts shadow over Congress candidates from Florida. Are policy plans made to please Trump?” by John Kennedy of USA Today Network-Florida. “Two special elections to fill congressional vacancies in Florida already have drawn a crowded field of candidates, including a pair of Republican contenders endorsed by Donald Trump. But now these candidates are throwing out policy proposals that appear crafted to appeal not just to conservative voters, but to the president-elect himself.

“Loosening Florida’s gun laws, blunting benefits to undocumented immigrants and moving the state closer toward allowing silver and gold as currency are among the campaign pitches being made in the contests which could be effectively decided in Republican primaries on Jan. 28.”

ARRESTED — “Former Hillsborough GOP Treasurer arrested on grand theft charges,” reports Janelle Irwin Taylor of Florida Politics. “Patrick Bailey, the former Treasurer for the Hillsborough County Republican Party, has been arrested on charges of third-degree grand theft and false entry in books of business.

“Bailey is accused of illegally transferring funds and writing himself personal checks from the GOP’s business account. He was arrested [last week] in Brandon by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s Economic Crimes Section.”

ANOTHER FLORIDIAN — One of the people President JOE BIDEN gave clemency to last week was NEVIN SHAPIRO, a former University of Miami booster who was convicted of running a Ponzi scheme, according to Michael Wilner of McClatchy.

Biden granted clemency to people who “were placed on home confinement during the Covid-19 pandemic and who have successfully reintegrated into their families and communities,” the White House said in a statement announcing the initial list.
