Where we differ with UFC at Sheepdog

At Sheepdog (on March 1-3), we will be teaching tactical self-defense for you to protect both yourself and loved ones from attack.

Some of what we do is very different from what you'll learn at an MMA gym or even Krav Maga studio.

We don't go to the ground.

In most fighting systems taught today, a lot is about ground wrestling and submissions. A lot of this is because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was so dominant in the early UFC. And to be completely honest, a very tight ground game is needed to be a professional MMA fighter today.

But at Sheepdog, we want to avoid the ground as much as humanly possible.

This is for a number of reasons.

First, if there is more than one assailant (or even the possibility of another assailant) jumping into the mix, the last thing you want is to be wrapped up in a pretzel position with another guy on the ground. All it takes is one kick to the head from his buddy and you're toast.

This problem is compounded if you're trying to protect your spouse or child at the same time. If you're wrestling someone on the ground, you have no idea what's happening to your loved ones.

That's why we teach you how to disable an assailant or group of assailants from a standing position.

Sometimes, the ground is unavoidable, and we will prepare you for that possibility.

But in almost every case, you want to be on your feet and ready to fight or run.

We recognize that this is a less common philosophy in "real world" oriented self-defense. That's why we have the absolute best Krav Maga instructors to show you how this works, and how you can master these skills as quickly as possible.
