Two different types of magnets have been studied for pain: - Static or permanent magnets. Static magnets marketed for pain are often encased in a wrap, such as a wristband, that is placed against the skin near where pain is felt. They are also sold in products such as jewelry, mats, pillows, and bed pads. Very limited research has been done on static magnets for pain, and no conclusive evidence of their effectiveness has been found.
- Electromagnets. The types of electromagnets studied for pain include pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and its subtypes, including repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation. Current research suggests that electromagnetic field therapy can relieve pain in patients with various musculoskeletal pain conditions and some osteoarthritis conditions, although the data are mixed. Electromagnetic therapies appear to be safe for treating pain.
