The government has branded Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. and his brother Pryde Henry as terrorists for their alleged roles in a series of "killings and harassment" in their province that culminated in the death of their political rival, Gov. Roel Degamo, in March.

'Egay' agri damage close to P3 billion 


The Department of Agriculture said losses due to Typhoon "Egay" (international name: Doksuri) has surged to P2.89 billion, affecting some 142,000 farmers and fishers in nine regions. Egay left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) late last week but was followed by another storm, "Falcon" (international name: Khanun), which developed into typhoon on its way out of PAR.

Keep masks on, DOH urges public


The Department of Health (DOH) has appealed to the public to "continue adhering to our layers of protection, such as wearing face masks," following its report indicating 10 new cases of EG.5, a new Omicron subvariant. President Marcos on July 21 issued Proclamation No. 297, declaring an end to the country's state of public health emergency and lifting the mandate to wear masks.

A fair and simple tax regime


Finally—and this is perhaps the most challenging of all—the government must show it is serious in collecting the right amount of taxes from everyone by embarking on an aggressive drive against tax evasion that produces court convictions instead of just charges being filed and then forgotten. Indeed, no one enjoys paying taxes. And no one enjoys it when their tax rates are hiked.
