The Trump Saga

The Story

Former President Trump pleaded not guilty.

Tell me more.

Yesterday, Trump appeared before a judge in DC and pleaded not guilty to the four charges against him for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The judge released him on the condition he doesn't communicate with witnesses in the case. The indictment accused him and six unnamed co-conspirators of lying about the election in order for Trump to stay in the White House.

Now what?

Trump's first hearing for the case is scheduled at the end of this month — just five days after the first Republican presidential primary debate. Trump's lawyer reportedly asked for an extension while Trump himself called this moment a "very sad day for America." The Justice Dept has said that the charges show Trump "was determined to remain in power."

Trump now faces at least 78 criminal charges and countless years in prison if convicted. Still, the current legal troubles don't seem to be stopping his chances for 2024 — with one poll saying he's a lead contender in the primary with a 54% approval rating.

And Also...This

What officially has a vaccine...

RSV. Yesterday, the CDC approved a new shot for babies. This fall, babies under eight months entering their first RSV season (November through March) and high-risk kids under 19 months should get one injection of an mRNA antibody shot. The injection contains an antibody that keeps the virus from spreading and infecting healthy cells. While most kids get RSV at some point, it's the leading cause of hospitalizations for kids under 1. While the vaccine was approved in May for people aged 60 and older, it's the first available treatment for babies. The drug — available this fall — will reportedly be covered by insurance and added to the CDC's childhood immunization schedule.

Who's implying 'all the rumors aren't true'...

Lizzo. Yesterday, the singer said the allegations of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment against her are as "unbelievable as they sound." Earlier this week, three former dancers filed a lawsuit, accusing the singer and her dance captain of sexual harassment and weight shaming. One of them described working with Lizzo as "very intense and very unforgiving." The lawsuit also mentioned Lizzo flipping off a dancer while reportedly yelling "Bye, bi***!" after the dancer resigned.

Why women across the country are left shaken…

The alleged victims of Negasi Zuberi. Earlier this week, the FBI said it had the man behind a string of attacks on sex workers in custody. The attacks — possibly dating back to 2016 and spanning at least four other states — allegedly involved attempting to kidnap and assault dozens of women. In one case, a woman poked a hole through a cinder block to escape what the FBI described as a "dungeon." The FBI warns that other victims may still be out there. The news comes amid heightened awareness of the dangers to women and sex workers in the aftermath of Gilgo Beach murders.

What's staying in place…

Asylum restrictions. Yesterday, an appeals court ruled that the Biden admin's asylum restrictions can stay in place as it makes its way through the courts. The policy automatically rejects any migrant who illegally enters the US without first getting protection from the countries they crossed through.
