Biz, commuters' groups: Rethink new travel rules


The influential Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has joined the growing clamor to immediately suspend the implementation of new travel rules issued by the government's antitrafficking council, on grounds that the latest policy is just too burdensome for the traveling public.


George Barcelon, president of the country's largest business organization, described the new travel rules as "draconian," and considers many of the requirements unnecessary.

Filing of candidacies marred by violence


The filing of candidacies for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections was marred by election-related violence ahead of the actual polls on Oct. 30. But the submission of certificates of candidacy scheduled this week has also become a "blockbuster," Comelec Chair George Garcia said, adding that the commission was "overwhelmed" by the turnout of aspiring officials.

UK keen to broaden security ties with PH


British Foreign Minister James Cleverly said the United Kingdom sees an "exciting time" ahead for its relationship with the Philippines, as the two nations agreed to refine their security ties. During his visit to Manila on Tuesday, Cleverly met with President Marcos to discuss, among other topics, the prospect of tighter maritime cooperation amid tensions between Manila and Beijing in the West Philippine Sea.

OPINION

Roll back the culture of violence 


Before it's too late, President Marcos should take concrete steps to rein in the predisposition of law enforcers toward violence and make it clear that what was encouraged in previous years will no longer be tolerated. And such a pronouncement should be backed up by concrete action of prosecuting those who had violated their solemn oath as our protectors.
