Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of July 3-9
For most of history, people conquered their fear of death by bringing death closer. Desks were staged with skulls to remind people of the urgency of life. These physical manifestations were not to create panic, but priority, humility, urgency, appreciation.
That's why we created our Memento Mori medallion, pendant, and signet ring (which is on sale this weekend!). On each, you'll find Marcus Aurelius's timeless reminder that "you could leave life right now" reminding us not to obsess over trivialities, or to worry too much about what people think of us.
In a recent episode on the Daily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday speaks about how the Stoics used their philosophy to navigate the good and the bad of their relationships. By balancing strictness and tolerance, the Stoics were able to strengthen their relationships with those around them:
"[Marcus Aurelius] says 'tolerant with others, strict with yourself'. He was conscious of the fact that it was called self-discipline for a reason – you control yourself, you control the standards you set for yourself, but you have to be tolerant and understanding of other people"
"We just have to learn to accept that we are not in control. That we must–from time to time…or most of the time–experience the consequences of other people's decisions, their whims, their vices, their mistakes, their egos. We can let this make us miserable, or we can come to terms with it. We can rail against the world, be angry at the causes of all this, or we could remember what Marcus said–that the world won't notice or care."
On a recent episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with voice actor and musician Troy Baker on the life of the artist and the parent, why he cried reading Meditations for the first time, and how gratitude is more beneficial than comparison:
"And that's a daily battle that I have to, that I get to wage with myself – don't let myself become susceptible to the thief that compares, but that I choose to go 'I have no idea if anybody else is dealing with this, but today I am.'"
