Retail shrink, a persistent problem for many chains, may finally be reaching its peak. UBS analyst Michael Lasser believes that shrink, or merchandise theft, at retail chains may be nearing its peak. This is based on the fact that shrink mentions on earnings calls are at their highest levels since before the pandemic. This suggests that executives are talking about shrink more often, which is often a sign that the problem is nearing its end. Shrink has been a challenge for many retailers in recent years, including Target, Walmart, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree. In the most recent quarter, Target estimated that it would lose $500 million in profits this year to shrinkage. If shrink is indeed nearing its peak, it would be a welcome relief for retailers. A drop in shrink would boost gross margins and profitability, which could help to offset some of the other challenges that retailers are facing. (read more)

Conservative Texas Senator Ted Cruz is putting the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on blast, and he is zeroing in on Chairwoman Lina Kahn. According to Cruz, there is a toxic work environment at the FTC. The senator says he has received numerous complaints and proof of the toxic environment from current and past employees. Cruz says employee morale has tanked, even though Kahn vowed to address the situation. The worth of the weaponry given to Ukraine over the past two years was overestimated by $6.2 billion, according to the Pentagon, and as a result, there is more money available for future security measures. Military services used replacement costs rather than the book value of the equipment provided to Ukraine, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters on Tuesday. Final computations, she continued, revealed a $3.6 billion inaccuracy in the current fiscal year and a $2.6 billion error in 2022. A Florida man who goes by the nickname "Pooh Bear" is facing murder charges after a deadly shooting happened during a game of chess. According to witnesses, Kristavion Jacoi Harris walked up to a home in Winter Haven at approximately 3:30 pm. A group of individuals were playing chess when Harris approached them. Eventually, gunshots rang out and Harris fled the scene. One victim died and another bystander was rushed to the hospital. Larry Adam, the Chief Investment Officer of Raymond James is weighing in on the market action as more than 55% of stocks in the S&P 500 are currently trading above their 50- and 200-day moving averages. "Given the improving earnings outlook in the second half of 2023 and the economy defying recession expectations, it comes as no surprise that both the NASDAQ and S&P 500 have officially entered a new bull market," Adam said. But he's warning investors not to get too excited and to exert caution in the near term.
