In a survey of over 17,000 teen girls in the US, over ~60% reported "persistent sadness and hopelessness". While close-sounding but not quite a DSM-5 diagnosis, 30% of these respondents also stated they had "seriously considered attempting suicide" — up 60% from a decade earlier.
Young women are in a mental health crisis. But the causal factors aren't clear. With complex issues some reductionism is necessary, but how much, and where do we point the blame?
