Happy Friday! Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 341 words, a 1.5-minute read.

1 big thing: Quitting time
Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics. Chart: Axios Visuals

September officially broke August's record for the most Americans to quit their jobs in a month.

  • Roughly 8.7 million Americans, or about 6% of the U.S. workforce, quit their jobs between the two months.

The big picture: "For every unemployed American in September, there were 1.4 openings," Bloomberg notes.

2. Behind the scenes: Police surveillance takes to the air

Photo: FBI via AP

This surveillance video, shown during Kyle Rittenhouse's trial in Wisconsin, was taken from an FBI airplane circling thousands of feet above a protest against police last August.

  • Why it matters: It turns out that aerial surveillance of protests has become very common, AP reports. Even if the video is blurry, police can combine it with other data to discover people's identities.

Zoom out: After George Floyd was killed last year, the National Guard used surveillance planes over demonstrations in Minnesota, D.C., Arizona and California, an Air Force inspector general report found.

  • In 2015, an AP investigation found the FBI had built a fleet of at least 50 surveillance planes.

What we're watching: Civil rights advocates complain that such surveillance can make people afraid to be seen associating with others at political functions, impinging on freedom of speech.

  • "Its intuitive bulky face design comes with a 'super-advanced' rotary dial and connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth."
  • "This working Chatter Telephone is so mobile, it even comes with wheels. ... Available exclusively at Best Buy while supplies last."

The bottom line: "Inspired by the original toy, it makes both imaginary and real phone calls."

A message from Amazon

"Before Amazon, money was tight. I wanted a good stable job"

When Marie joined Amazon, she started making at least $15 an hour and gained some peace of mind.

The background: Amazon raised their starting wage to at least $15 an hour in 2018 because it is good for workers, good for business, and good for communities.
