Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... Neo-Nazis are still on Facebook. And they're making money Kampf der Nibelungen, or Battle of the Nibelungs, still thrives on Facebook, where organizers maintain multiple pages, as well as on Instagram and YouTube, which they use to spread their ideology, draw in recruits and make money through ticket sales and branded merchandise.
The Battle of the Nibelungs — a reference to a classic heroic epic much loved by the Nazis — is one of dozens of far-right groups that continue to leverage mainstream social media for profit, despite Facebook's and other platforms' repeated pledges to purge themselves of extremism.
But simply cutting off such groups could have unintended, damaging consequences. Giving platforms wide latitude to sanction organizations deemed undesirable could give repressive governments leverage to eliminate their critics. Moreover, banning such groups from Facebook and other major platforms would potentially limit their access to new audiences, but it could also drive them deeper underground, making it more difficult to monitor their activities.
Why is the National Guard being called to a hospital in New York right now? Today marks the deadline for healthcare workers in New York to have received the first dose of the virus vaccine. Employees who refuse to get the jab will be without a job (and without unemployment insurance) if they fail to meet the requirement. This means that hospitals and nursing homes across the state could be very short staffed, and the governor is scrambling to address that potential problem.
Possible solutions include bringing in professionals from out of state, or even deploying the National Guard to these facilities. According to the most recent reporting, about 84% of hospital employees had been vaccinated, and 77% of nursing home workers had gotten the shots before the deadline. The biggest provider in New York, Northwell Health, has said that they have "thousands of holdouts" who are refusing the vaccine. According to officials, there are more than 3,000 volunteers standing by to help in the event of a staffing shortage.
"I am monitoring the staffing situation closely and we have a plan to increase our health care workforce and help alleviate the burdens on our hospitals and other health care facilities," the governor said over the weekend. "I commend all of the health care workers who have stepped up to get themselves vaccinated, and I urge all remaining health care workers who are unvaccinated to do so not so they can continue providing care."
All the updates you need on the murder of Gabby Petito Gabby Petito's family invited the public to a funeral for their daughter Sunday afternoon as the search for Brian Laundrie, her fiancé and person of interest in her killing, enters the second week. Petito, 22, went missing in August while living out of a van as she and Laundrie traveled across the country. Her body was found in Grand Teton National Park and her death ruled a homicide, though cause of death has not yet been determined.
The FBI once again visited the home that Laundrie and Petito shared with his parents and which Laundrie, apparently willingly, disappeared from. His parents pointed police in the direction of a nearby nature reserve, but so far the search has been unsuccessful. There is a warrant out for Laundrie's arrest related to bank fraud. The FBI reportedly stopped by the house to pick up a sample of Laundrie's DNA, likely to aid in the autopsy.
Meanwhile, an experienced rancher and outdoorsman who lives outside the alligator-infested nature reserve where authorities are searching for Brian Laundrie doesn't think the fugitive is in there — alive or dead. Florida cattle rancher Alan McEwen has spent nearly every day of the last 30 years navigating the woods where Brian Laundrie is suspected of hiding and says it's not conducive to habitation.
Laundrie's survival skills have been at the center of conversation since the 23-year-old's parents first reported him missing. McEwen, who has been assisting North Port Police Department in searching the preserve for signs of Laundrie, remains doubtful the Youtuber has what it takes to make it more than a couple of days in the swamp-like reserve. Asked about the possibility Laundrie may have died trying to hide in the reserve, McEwen was certain Laundrie's body would have been found by now.
