Republicans tried to punish Democrats during their vote-a-rama.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has resigned; Republicans tried to punish Democrats during their vote-a-rama. Tonight's Sentences was written by Gabby Birenbaum. - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) first rose to the governor's mansion on the heels of then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer's career-ending sex worker scandal. More than a decade later, Cuomo announced he will resign over a scandal of his own — reports of sexual harassment against multiple women. [NPR / Karen Dewitt]
- Cuomo went out with the same defiant attitude he has maintained all along. His resignation likely owes to the fact that the New York state legislature had been working on an impeachment inquiry and, given calls for his resignation from every New York congressional Democrat and national leaders, he was unlikely to beat a trial. [Vox / Andrew Prokop]
- When New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report detailing 11 instances of sexual harassment and a culture, fostered by the governor, that was toxic to women, Cuomo maintained he would hold on to power and considered the entire effort a setup. [Washington Post / Josh Dawsey and Michael Scherer]
- The final straw for Cuomo seemed to be the resignation of his closest ally and senior aide Melissa DeRosa, who was named in the report for, it found, attempting to retaliate against one of Cuomo's victims, followed by a day of public repudiations from his victims, Assembly members, and former allies. [NYT / Matt Flegenheimer, Maggie Haberman, William K. Rashbaum, and Danny Hakim]
- In his announcement yesterday, Cuomo said he would leave office in two weeks. He continued to deny that he sexually harassed anyone, saying that the "line [had] been redrawn" regarding the treatment of women, but that it would be most productive for him to leave office. - Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a former Congress member from western New York who has served as lieutenant governor for the past seven years, will step into the governor's role. [Albany Times-Union / Brendan J. Lyons]
- She condemned Cuomo immediately following the release of James's report. She will become New York's first female governor. [CNN / Chandelis Duster and Veronica Stracqualursi]
- Cuomo often stymied New York progressives by deploying allied groups to campaign against them to stay in his favor, and uniting moderate Democrats with Republicans. With a new governor, New York's left will be able to claim more power and influence in Albany. [Intelligencer / Ross Barkan]
What did we learn from vote-a-rama? - On a party-line vote, the Senate approved Democrats' 2022 budget resolution early Wednesday morning, sending the spending blueprint to the House, where approval would allow the Senate to pursue the budget reconciliation process and pass a spending bill without Republican support. [Roll Call / Paul M. Krawzak]
- All 50 Senate Democrats will need to stay together for the bill to pass. Republicans tried to find Democratic divisions through proposing politically contentious amendments, though all 50 supported amendments that penalize defunding the police or funding the Green New Deal — the latter of which Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said he supported because it had nothing to do with the actual Green New Deal. [Politico / Caitlin Emma and Jennifer Scholtes]
- Democrats also stayed together to block amendments that would call for all schools to fully reopen, increase military funding, and change the federal income tax deduction cap, a particularly thorny issue for Democrats from wealthier states. [CBS News and AP]
- But Republicans were able to peel off a few Democrats on some amendments, exposing divides. Sens. Mark Kelly (AZ), Joe Manchin (WV), and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) joined Republicans on an amendment to means-test electric vehicle tax credits, and Manchin joined Republicans to support bans on federal funding for abortions and teaching critical race theory in schools. [NYT / Emily Cochrane]
- Voting on the actual legislation of the budget bill will create a much more painful vote-a-rama, with the text of the bill at stake. That is expected to occur this fall. [Axios / Alayna Treene]
- Soccer superstar Lionel Messi signed with Paris Saint-Germain, after leading FC Barcelona to 35 trophies over decades of play. [AP / Jerome Pugmire]
- California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is mandating proof of vaccination or regular Covid-19 testing for public school teachers and employees. [Politico / Mackenzie Mays]

"It's as if we caught a nice long pass at midfield but we still have 50 yards to go to score a touchdown." Two scientists. A billion-dollar wager. One unanswered question: Is the first human who will live to 150 already alive? The technology to make that happen may already be in development. But if it works, there will be new, unsettling questions for humankind to answer. [Spotify] This email was sent to edwardlorilla1986.paxforex@blogger.com.
