Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... UN watchdog states that North Korea has restarted a key nuclear reactor In January of this year, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un called the United States his country's "biggest enemy," pushing to extend North Korea's arsenal — including nuclear weapons. At that time, Kim also stated that the only way that North Korea and the U.S. could achieve peaceful relations would be if the U.S. withdrew its North Korea hostile policy.
Eight months later, Kim appears to be making good on that promise. The International Atomic Energy Agency said there have been indications of operations at the reactor in North Korea's main nuclear complex since July 2021. Evidence also suggests that North korea opened a lab for five months to extract plutonium — a key fuel for nuclear weapons — from nuclear waste.
Amazon is making its debut in the buy now, pay later world Yesterday, shares of Affirm — a platform that enables users to pay for their purchases in monthly installments, without interest — soared 44%. That's because it just entered into a partnership with the biggest retail fish in the shopping pond. On Friday, Amazon announced that its customers would be able to pay for products over $50 in more manageable installments, using Affirm. Some shoppers had access to the new feature as early as last week.
The move was described as an "unambiguous positive" by Bank of America analysts, noting that it really symbolized just how big of a player Affirm was becoming in the "buy now, pay later" market. Those same analysts had already stamped their buy rating on the company. The partnership comes as younger shoppers are increasingly using BNPL platforms, which often don't tack on the hefty interest rates that most credit cards do. Millennials and Gen-Zs are big fans of the expanded buying power they enjoy because of such offerings.
"By partnering with Amazon we're bringing the transparency, predictability and affordability that Affirm provides today to the millions of people who shop on Amazon.com in the U.S.," said a top executive at Affirm. "Offering Affirm's alternative to credit cards also delivers more of the payment choice and flexibility consumers on Amazon want."
20 years reset in a month: America's war ends as the Northern Alliance's begins In the northeastern region of Afghanistan lies the country's smallest province, Panjshir. Within this province is a verdant valley, wind farms adorning cliffs, a gleaming turquoise river… and the last stronghold against the Taliban in the entirety of Afghanistan. Historically, Panjshir was under the command of resistance leader Ahmad Shah Massoud. The "Lion of Panjshir" held it for years until his assassination by Al-Qaeda in 2001. Two days later, the Twin Towers fell.
Now, Massoud's son has rallied resistance fighters under the flag of the Northern Alliance, which previously helped the United States take Afghanistan. The group has allied with several other movements to form the National Resistance Front, which aims to protect Panjshir from Taliban occupation.
But the Lion's son is in for a reckoning unlike that his father faced in the 90s against the Taliban. Massoud's fighters lack combat experience, and his resistance group lacks international support and recognition as a whole. In contrast, his father had the full backing of the United States. Biden has already signed agreements with the Taliban, while Russia and China are ready to formally recognize its government.
