AHRQ Toolkit Helps Engage Patients and Family Members in the Diagnostic Process

conditions 2

A new AHRQ toolkit can help engage patients and family members in the diagnostic process. The toolkit, developed for patients and clinicians regardless of practice setting, is composed of two evidence-based strategies that promote meaningful engagement and communication to improve diagnostic safety. The resource includes a patient note sheet to help patients share their symptoms and several practice orientation and training tools to help clinicians foster deep listening and "presence" in clinical encounters. Barriers to Appropriate Antibiotic Prescribing Identified at Hospital Discharge

An AHRQ-funded study published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology identified five barriers to appropriate antibiotic prescribing at the time of hospital discharge:

  • Clinician perceptions that patients expect to receive an antibiotic prescription
  • Diagnostic uncertainty
  • Differences in prescribing between an attending physician-led versus a multidisciplinary team culture
  • Not accounting for all antibiotics prescribed during the patient's entire course of illness
  • Discharging a patient before all clinical data is received

Researchers who interviewed 37 healthcare workers and 16 patients at a tertiary-care hospital and a community hospital suggested targeted interventions may lead to more effective outcomes for antibiotic use during the hospital-to-home transition. Access to Substance Abuse Treatment Remained Flat Despite Increase in Opioid-Related Emergency Department Visits

A new Data Spotlight from AHRQ shows that emergency department (ED) visits for opioid-related diagnoses more than doubled from 2015 to 2018, but access to substance abuse treatment at specialty facilities remained flat. Furthermore, disparities between racial/ethnic groups and Whites related to treatment access have grown. The Data Spotlight, which also describes ways that EDs can better link patients to specialty substance abuse treatment, was released in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day. It is based on measures reported in the 2019 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report and was developed jointly by AHRQ and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

AHRQ Signals Intent To Support Research Aimed at Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities

An upcoming Notice of Funding Opportunity from AHRQ will describe the agency's plans to support research on disseminating and implementing patient-centered outcomes research findings to reduce healthcare disparities. According to a recent Notice of Intent, interventions will focus on reducing disparities by wide-scale implementation of evidence-based care. Grant applicants may propose interventions in different healthcare settings. Areas where interventions have evidence for decreasing disparities include promoting improved cancer and chronic condition screening, improving control of chronic conditions, and improving prenatal care, maternal health, and infant mortality.
