Here’s what’s ahead for April

Dear book clubbers,   First, we look back. Last week we met up with Naomi Alderman, author of The Power, for our monthly live event. We talked about the patriarchy and revenge and how Naomi managed to predict the 2016 presidential debates well before they took place, and Naomi dropped some hints about what the forthcoming TV adaptation of The Power will look like. You can catch the whole thing on video here.   Next, we look forward. In April, we are reading The Death of Vivek Oji, by Akwaeke Emezi. It's a lovely, ferocious kaleidoscope of a novel that doesn't cleanly fit into one genre or another: It's a murder mystery of sorts, but it's never quite clear that there's been a murder. It's also a love story, and a coming of age story. It's the story of a life, told in fragments. I can't wait to talk about it with you. Here's the link to RSVP. THE LATEST IN BOOKS AT VOX   Beverly Cleary, author of the beloved Ramona Quimby books, died in March at the age of 104, so here is a tribute to her and to Ramona. I spent some time thinking about grief, and specifically the unprocessed grief of the pandemic, through the lens of A Grief Observed, the journal C.S. Lewis kept after the death of his wife.  In my recurring advice column Ask a Book Critic, I recommend books on urbanism, histories of the end of the world, and more.  Allow Vox critic-at-large Emily VanDerWerff to explain why compiling lists of novels and TV shows made by people with marginalized identities are not the same thing as activism.  Emily also takes a walk through a new biography of the director Mike Nichols, and the refreshing idea that even though our culture usually allows creative geniuses to be jerks, Nichols tried really hard not to be anyway. Rachel Ramirez talked to Chamorro author and activist Julian Aguon about his new book The Properties of Perpetual Light and the generational grief of colonization.
