NEW: Apprentices and trainees June quarter 2020

Latest national data shows apprentice and trainee commencements were down 35.8% in June 2020 (compared with the same quarter in 2019).

Commencements and completions both decreased significantly this quarter. This was largely reflected in non-trade occupations, with commencements down 44% and completions down 26.3%.

Likewise, in-training figures showed a 10.6% decrease for non-trade occupations as at June 2020, compared with an 0.3% decrease of those in-training for trade occupations.

Despite notable decreases across the board, there was an increase in commencements for Construction and Trade Workers, up 7.7% in June 2020 compared with the same quarter last year.

NEW: Government funding of VET 2019

In 2019, government funding of the Australian VET system totalled $6.4 billion, up 3.2% compared with 2018.

This figure includes:

  • Australian Government contributions of $2.6 billion (down 4.5%)
  • State and territory government contributions of $3.7 billion (up 9.4%). 
The Australian Government also provided:
  • $275.9 million for VET Student Loans, including grandfathered VET FEE-HELP loans (down 7.2%)
  • $222.4 million for Trade Support Loans (up 4.9%).

This report provides insight into the flow of funding in the public VET sector, including what is funded and how funding is distributed.

The Industry Directory on the AISC's National Industry Insights Report is being updated with the latest data and information over the coming months.

Read on to find out what you can discover on the following industry pages:

  • Electrotechnology: The number of Internet-of-Things devices is predicted to grow from 25 billion in 2019 to 75 billion by 2025. This will have a big impact on future skills needs for this industry
  • Health: There are around 1700 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Health Workers in Australia, who play a vital role in addressing significant risks to Indigenous communities during pandemics
