What would you do if cornered by a family of bears?  We've all heard the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  But did you know the story you heard growing up isn't the original?  It's not even close…  The original story wasn't "child friendly" enough.   Like so many fairy tales, the deeper lessons got lost as the story changed.     In one version, Goldilocks runs off into the forest after Baby Bear finds her sleeping in his bed. What kind of lesson is that?  In another version, the bears are fond of Goldilocks. She's cute. They decide it's OK for her to break into their house, eat their food, and break their furniture. Goldilocks promises to behave from now on. Not very realistic, but sweet. Optimistic even.   Then there's the version where the bears capture Goldilocks. Her mom rescues her and they escape. In that version, the bears are the baddies. Wrong lesson.  The original version is a much more powerful story.  In the first published version, there isn't a Goldilocks. Instead, there's an old woman. She thinks the talking bears who moved into the neighborhood are impertinent for not inviting her into their home.   So, being nosy, she lets herself into their house when they go out. Then she spits out, throws out, and finally drinks a bowl of milk. Imagine the mess...  Then she breaks a chair AND a bed. When the bears come home hungry, she hides in the closet. Oops. Bad idea.  This is where it gets interesting.  What do you think the bears did to the old woman? It wasn't some sort of scolding. And it wasn't a nice pat on the head and "come visit anytime…" Nope.  First, they threw her on the fire … but she didn't burn.  Then they tried to drown her … but she wouldn't drown.  In the end, tired of messing around, they impaled her on the spire of St. Paul's Cathedral in London.  Pretty gruesome, right? You might not get away with telling a child that version today.   But…  It's a lot more powerful.  If you heard THAT version of the story you wouldn't mess around with bears. You'd be less likely to enter someone's house without an invitation.
