1 big thing: Milton's wake

Hurricane Milton killed at least eight people and left millions without power, but Florida largely escaped the worst-case scenario that had seemed likely as the storm grew.

  • The storm made landfall south of Tampa Bay last night as a Category 3 hurricane.
  • Widespread flooding and damaging winds were reported along Florida's Gulf Coast. Milton ripped part of the roof off Tropicana Field, the Tampa Bay Rays' stadium, which was used as a staging area for first responders.

⛽️ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he expects gas stations to reopen soon and that the state was spared the worst destruction Milton could have caused.

  • "It doesn't mean there's not going be a lot of damage. It doesn't mean there's not going to be a lot we're going to have to contend with," he said. "But just in terms of what we were prepped for, I think we probably have an abundance of resources."

The latest ... How to help.

Ethel Kennedy — the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and a steadying force in a family beset by tragedy — died today at age 96.

  • Kennedy was an "inexhaustible source of good cheer," Evan Thomas wrote in his biography of RFK. "Ethel preferred to look at the world in black and white; the good guys (her husband, always) versus the bad guys (her husband's foes)."

Ethel Kennedy was staunchly devoted to her family and her Catholic faith. She urged her husband to run for president in 1968 despite his fears that he might be assassinated, as his brother had been.

  • She never remarried after RFK's death, choosing instead to put her energy into their 11 children and continuing her late husband's work for social justice.

Grazer — "a large adult female with a long straight muzzle" — is the winner of this year's Fat Bear Week, the annual popularity contest among bears at Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve.

  • ๐Ÿ† Grazer was last year's champion, too.
  • This year, she beat out Chunk, a dominant male who killed one of Grazer's cubs.
