Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of May 6-12
Before we get into this week's review … as we mentioned last week, Ryan Holiday's new book Right Thing, Right Now, the much-anticipated third installment in the Stoic Virtues series, is officially available for preorder. The book is about doing what our nature demands of us—that is, becoming a good human being, as Marcus Aurelius reminded himself—and the transformational power we experience when we decide to live by a moral code.
We have a limited amount of numbered, signed first-edition copies of the book, and if you preorder today, we have some cool bonuses for you, like a live Q&A with Ryan Holiday, bonus chapters, and more. Head over to dailystoic.com/justice and get your copy today!
PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
But here is a pretty simple test we can apply most of the time—try not to do anything that, as Marcus Aurelius said, "requires walls or curtains." If we're inclined to hide it, we probably shouldn't do it. If we dread the publicity, maybe we're not living or doing right.
In a recent video on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan Holiday shares what he learned from his mentor (and closet Stoic) Robert Greene, such as keeping a commonplace book, the idea that success is a lagging indicator, and the importance of betting on yourself:
"[Robert] bet on me, I bet on myself, and I took this big risk. Sometimes, we enter action with boldness, sometimes we act before we're ready — that's what the Stoic virtue of courage is about. You're afraid, but you do it anyways, you do the scary thing because if it was safe, if it was guaranteed, if it was easy, everyone would do it."
In a popular episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with actor Troy Baker on why one of the biggest goals in life is to be okay with death and why gratitude is much more beneficial than comparison:
"Today was a gift, and I'm not promised the same gift tomorrow, but if I get it again, I will ravish and ravenously enjoy it."
Living as our nature demands us, like a good a human being, actually has a pretty interesting side effect. By simply doing the right thing, we gain the confidence to be ourselves, boldly, without apology, no matter how many eyes are watching.
"The tranquility that comes when you stop caring what they say," Marcus Aurelius writes. "Or think, or do. Only what you do." And then he reminds himself of the only questions we should be asking ourselves: "Is this fair? Is this the right thing to do?"
How we learn what is fair, what exactly is the right thing to do, is what the new book is all about…
Right Thing, Right Now is a a powerful antidote to the moral failures of our modern age, and a manual for living virtuously. By developing good values, we form good character, which in turn motivates us to perform good deeds in the world, as seen through the stories of historical figures such as Marcus Aurelius, Florence Nightingale, Jimmy Carter, Gandhi, and Frederick Douglass, whose examples of kindness, honesty, integrity, and loyalty we share in the book as pillars of upright living for us to emulate.
Preordering makes a huge difference for authors (and bookstores) as they try to get a book off the ground. So it'd mean so much if you could support this book. To make it worth your while, we put together a bunch of awesome bonuses, such as bonus chapters, a live Q&A with Ryan Holiday, an extended, annotated bibliography, and a signed, numbered page from the original manuscript (full of Ryan's handwritten edits and changes!).
Also, exclusively available at the Daily Stoic Store, we have a limited number of signed and numbered first-edition copies of Right Thing, Right Now available. Once these sell out, that's it, they're gone. So get one while you can! (P.S. We also have unsigned copies cheaper than Amazon.)
