Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of January 29 - February 4
PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
Jealousy and envy rarely see the full picture, rarely take into account the costs—past and future—that go along with something. Besides, it's pointless. We have our life. Our fate. We have our own happiness to attend to.
In a recent video on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan Holiday and Robert Greene sat down at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, California to talk about how success can poison the ego, why death was so present in the ancient world, and the tragedy of not studying the past (P.S. Ryan will be doing two LIVE events in Australia this summer, learn more and purchase tickets here):
"History is a compendium of all of the most incredible human mistakes ever made. It's a compendium of human stupidity. There's so much to learn from that. And to ignore that incredible wealth that's sitting before you is, to me, kind of tragic."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday spoke with author and psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais on the reality of imposter syndrome, how Stoic philosophy holds up in modern society, and the proper way to handle other people's opinions:
"To the most powerful people, people that have a real sense of self, the external world doesn't dictate their internal experience. So the external world is happening — it could be thumps up or thumbs down, cheering, booing, whatever. All that is noise to the signal and the signal is 'was I true to my thoughts, my words, my actions?' 'Was I true to my first principles?' 'Did I bring my best efforts into this?'"
As we mentioned above, Ryan Holiday is doing two LIVE events in Australia where you can see him discuss the timeless art of turning trials into opportunities, the four Tenants of Stoic Leadership, and more. We're calling it The Stoic Life. Join us in Sydney on July 31st and Melbourne on August 1st. We'll have a limited number of slots for a VIP meet-and-greet as well if you want to chat afterward. It's going to be great. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
