Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of January 1 - 7
As Epictetus reminds us, philosophy is a "hard winter's training," practice that a soldier does in the safety of camp so they might draw on it in the heat of battle. This is one of the ideas behind The Daily Stoic, which is designed as a series of philosophical practices to build muscle memory and strength for when you need it. Right now, the ebook is just $1.99! Get it today, for you or someone you know who could benefit from spiritual exercising.
PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
Marcus would later talk about how the philosopher is one with their weapon—more like a boxer than a swordsman. Because while a fencer can be caught without their sword, a boxer just clenches their fist, ready to go, anytime, anywhere. That's what we're trying to do as we study, we're trying to create a practice that fuses us with our philosophy. That makes us one with it. That inserts it into our DNA so that we are forever changed by it.
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with bodybuilder and author Arnold Schwarzenegger at the 92NY in New York City about his new book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life, their shared love for animals, and the importance of removing all distractions from your routine:
"I would never touch the phone before I feed the animals and go to the gym… the danger is it comes in and side tracks you. Let's assume for a second your goal is bicycle riding or stationary bike riding or exercising every morning. So, if you get out of bed and start thinking about [your phone], it could be that that derails you. Because maybe you feel like, 'maybe today I shouldn't,' 'I need to make this phone call,' and all this kind of stuff. But if you don't think that can happen, if you're out of bed and at your stationary bike and you go and get to the regular [routine] — you do your work."

WHAT RYAN HOLIDAY IS READING:
"
"We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted with a hopeless situation, when facing a fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness to the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn one's predicament into a human achievement. When we are no longer able to change a situation…we are challenged to change ourselves."
A philosopher must become one with their weapon, Marcus Aurelius tells us. That's why we created The Daily Stoic as a daily practice so you can become one with the philosophy for when you need it…
