It's the monthly jobs numbers today and they're not going to be pretty and will be possibly the tip of the iceberg as we head into May.

Good morning. The most recent consumer credit data indicates that debt soared in November, particularly credit card debt. The rise marked the second-largest surge on record.

If December's data looks similar, it may be a sign that the holiday season was largely paid for with credit, which will start to come due in the next few weeks.

For investors, it's a sign that the credit card companies, which enjoy a profitable oligopoly, remain alive and well. And traders may want to look for opportunities to short retailers that reported great numbers this holiday season, as the seasonal trend may have already ended.

Improving Profit Margins Can Mean Big Bucks for Shareholders

You pay a big price for a cheery consensus. We went from a lot of pessimism, a lot of certainty that we were going to have a recession to a lot of optimism ... and there's way too much consensus that there's not going to be a recession, interest rates are going to drop and the stock market's going to do well.
- Charles Bobrinskoy, analyst at Ariel Investments, on the market's high level of optimism right now, which could lead to a sudden and surprise pullback at some point in the next few months.
