Announcements Director's Message from Helene M. Langevin, M.D. January 9, 2024 As we have explored factors that influence the health of the whole person, it has become increasingly evident that interrelationships—between different body organs and systems, between genetics and environment, and between the mind and body—are crucial in both health and disease. Even when we're focusing on a single disease process, we need to consider multiple mechanisms and parts of the body, as well as people's lifestyles and environments, to fully understand how best to prevent or manage it. | January 2024 Clinical Digest Several mind and body approaches, including relaxation techniques, yoga, tai chi, hypnotherapy, and meditation may be useful for managing symptoms of stress in your patients. For some stress-related conditions, mind and body approaches are used as an adjunct to other forms of treatment. This issue of the digest provides a summary of current research on some of these approaches for stress, anxiety, and stress-related conditions. | The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks to identify an outstanding Staff Scientist 1 to be the facility head to lead activities, supervise staff, and manage the budget of the NIH Pain Research Center (PRC). The facility head will have the opportunity to do independent research as well as collaborate and facilitate research with other investigators. The PRC is part of the NCCIH Division of Intramural Research (DIR), which conducts basic, translational, and clinical research to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of pain processing and modulation of pain. The PRC is housed within the NIH Clinical Center, the nation's largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research. The PRC collects a wide range of measures related to human pain experience, including deep phenotyping of pain presentation and responses to pain therapies, brain imaging, genomics, and metabolomics. The PRC serves as a research, training, and diagnostic hub for intramural investigators to study and advance our knowledge of pain and pain mechanisms. The application deadline is March 4, 2024. | Resources for Researchers Highlighted Funding Opportunities Diversity Resources Submit Your Late Breaker Abstracts Through January 19 The 2024 International Congress on Integrative Medicine & Health (ICIMH) is the most comprehensive scientific congress in integrative medicine and health—and is the perfect opportunity to showcase your work in the field! Langevin, M.D., National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health Helene M. Langevin, M.D., was destined for a career in medicine. Not only did she grow up around doctors, but she was always curious about how the body worked. In 2018, she became Director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).
