PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
"We have no idea what the next year will hold for us. We know what the past, even the last few years, have been like. So, as Seneca said, we should be routinely peering ahead, planning for the unexpected, running these war games–to lessen the strength of the blow before it lands. We should put ourselves in the position, as Epictetus said, to be able to greet adversity with the expression, "You are precisely what I trained for."
In a recent video on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan Holiday shares Stoic wisdom to help you live longer and happier. While the Stoics practiced the art of memento mori, and knew that death could come at any time, they still developed practices to maintain their mental and physical strength, such as pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones:
"Epictetus says, 'You must undergo a hard winter training.' Exposing yourself, getting out, getting uncomfortable on purpose is preparation for the inevitability of discomfort and difficulty in the future….So if it's cold, step out there. Enjoy it, jump in the snow, turn the cold knob in the shower. Step out there, get outside your comfort zone. It's toughening you up, making you better, putting you in a better position to be more resilient and strong in the future."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with author and physician Dr. Peter Attia on the philosophy and quality aspects of our lives, early morning routines we still practice from the Stoics, and doing things now for the life you want in the future:
"It's not sufficient to wait until you're in your marginal decade [last decade of your life] to do something about it. In other words, you can't get to the marginal decade completely out of shape and then say, 'Okay, now I want to try to get in shape to be able to play 18 holes of golf…You have to start sowing the seeds today. You have to start doing things today to make sure you have that life you want tomorrow."

WHAT RYAN HOLIDAY IS READING:
"
Facing reality takes courage. It takes courage to revise your ideas, or rethink something you thought you knew. It takes courage to tell yourself something is not working. It takes courage to accept feedback that bruises your self-image. The challenge of facing reality is ultimately the challenge of facing ourselves. We must acknowledge the things we cannot control and focus our efforts to manage the things we can. Facing reality demands acknowledging our mistakes and failures, learning from them, and moving forward."
As Dr. Attia put it above, you have to start doing things TODAY that set you up to have the life you want tomorrow. That's what the Daily Stoic New Year New You Challenge is all about…
These aren't pie-in-the-sky, theoretical discussions but clear, immediate exercises and methods you can begin right now to start sowing the seeds for the life you want. We'll tell you what to do, how to do it, and why it works.
Participants will receive:

Epictetus asked, why is it that we wait to demand the best for and of ourselves? It's crazy! Here you are today, staring down the barrel of 2024.
