Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of May 22-28
When we think of wealth, we think of big houses, fancy cars, the Instagramable vacations. But the Stoics had a slightly different definition. Seneca said, "poverty isn't having too little. It's wanting more."
Do you wish your daily practices and mindset towards money and wealth were better? If you've always wanted to make a change, now is your time! We created a new course that builds upon the best Stoic insights into wealth and money and puts them into a set of achievable, relatable, timeless practices: The Wealthy Stoic: A Daily Stoic Guide To Being Rich, Free, and Happy.
In a recent episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with actor and director Zach Braff about the power of amor fati, dealing with trauma, turning pain into art, and his new movie, A Good Person:
"There is a community in experiencing emotional pain. And there's something really healing in that. [Art] is really a salve for loneliness. The most powerful thing that's come out of this is feeling less lonely by sharing what I made."
"Our finances are so much more than what stocks to invest in or what career path to pursue. It's more than budgets or tax mitigation. True success is a result of asking deeper questions, having a more philosophical understanding of what's at stake and what is important."
"Perhaps the most counterintuitive truth of the universe is that the more you give to others the more you'll get. Understanding this is the beginning of wisdom."
In an episode on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan shares how the Stoics felt content with what they have by defining the word "enough." Through Stoic philosophy, we can define "enough" in a way that leads to happiness and fulfillment:
"It's not that winning isn't great and that you shouldn't strive to be the best that you can be. But, the idea that you can never be satisfied, that you'll never feel good, is a horrible thing. If you're trying to create a formula for misery, that's literally what you would come up with."
