STEP UP FOR BREASTFEEDING: PROTECT, PROMOTE, SUPPORT For over 40 years, USAID has supported breastfeeding initiatives around the world to save lives, prevent malnutrition, and enhance the long-term health of women and children. Breastfeeding is one of the most widely recognized practices that can prevent malnutrition, support optimal growth and development for infants, and reduce the risk of certain cancers for breastfeeding women. This World Breastfeeding Week, USAID is excited to join the global community to elevate the vital role of breastfeeding to reach broader maternal and child survival goals. Achieving optimal breastfeeding goals requires collective responsibility. Breastfeeding is more than a one person job, however, in many places around the world, women shoulder the responsibility alone or with very little support. In recognition that scaling up breastfeeding worldwide requires broad-based support, USAID promotes breastfeeding as a collective responsibility that families, communities, health systems, governments, and development partners must champion together. USAID supports mothers and children to overcome breastfeeding obstacles by supporting health workers to provide and sustain breastfeeding-friendly environments, increasing quality lactation education and care, and restoring and transforming breastfeeding systems affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
