Gen Z is the first generation to go from birth through adolescence, completely connected. Through personal narratives, CBS Reports reveals the toll the online world is taking on kids' self-esteem and self-control, as well as how some intrepid teens are trying to reshape their generation's relationship with technology.

Kids and young people, ages 9-24, spend nearly half of their waking hours – an average of six to nine hours per day - on the internet. And it's not good for them. Forty-five percent of teens say they feel overwhelmed by drama on social media and nearly half of all minors have reported having a potentially harmful experience online. But it's a world even those that want to disconnect from struggle to escape. Basic communication between peers, school events, and even school assignments are increasingly only available online. But this generation is not sitting idly by. They're on a mission to restore the balance to have technology help more than it harms.
