Image source Canva In 2020, the United States saw the largest drop in life expectancy that we've seen since World War II. And while the drop wasn't as drastic in 2021, it marked the second year in a row of declines.
In 2020, life expectancy dropped by 1.9 years. In 2021, it dropped another 0.4 years.
"Although the introduction and availability of effective vaccines were expected to curb US mortality rates in 2021, slow vaccine uptake and the spread of the Delta variant produced large surges in mortality," the researchers wrote.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, coronavirus was one of the top three causes of death in both of the years, with a small exception in the summer of 2021.
Now that the pandemic is more under control, can we expect this to be the last year of declines?
