Dear BoF Community,

If 2020 was the year the pandemic stopped fashion in its tracks, 2021 brought fresh urgency to the industry's efforts to clean up its act. Climate risks and labour rights violations in supply chains loomed large, and as BoF's inaugural Sustainability Index found, there's still a big gap between commitments to do better and real progress.

But there were also positive signs of action: big brands and scrappy start-ups have entered the race to bring innovative materials to market, specialised PR firms are taking on greenwashing and even the nitty gritty question of packaging's impact is getting more attention. Still, big challenges remain, not least outwardly eco-conscious Gen-Z consumers' appetite for fast fashion and the need for brands to put up more money to make the industry more sustainable.

In the coming year, the industry is likely going to need to make bigger shifts to adapt to mounting pressure and regulatory scrutiny on its environmental and social impact.
