BoF is away for its annual break until Jan. 4. In the meantime, we invite you to explore highlights of our news and analysis from the year.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY: SATURDAY, JANUARY 1, 2022 | | Dear BoF Community, Fashion leaders entered 2021 hyper-focused on economic recovery and socio-political issues, including sustainability and diversity. Throughout the year, they grappled with masks-and-vaccination mandates for their stores and corporate headquarters — and whether to bring employees back to the office at all. A labour shortage was exacerbated by pay disparities and store safety issues as well as by the "Great Resignation." In fashion, brands struggled to keep their stores fully staffed, and watched top executive talent flock to tech companies. Companies launched new employee wellness initiatives and explored once unthinkable options, including permanent remote work and a four-day work week. Pressure to reconcile external marketing with internal diversity practises made space for new C-suite stars, including chief diversity officers and chief brand officers — although neither role has been without challenges and criticisms. Port snarls and soaring shipping costs led companies, including Nordstrom, to hire chief supply chain officers. Sheena Butler-Young, Senior Correspondent
