Southwest not feeling the LUV

Chaos as Southwest Airlines cancels hundreds of flights
 ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
Natural gas. Oil. Coal.

These are the things that we were supposed to have left behind us in the "clean energy" revolution.

However, with infrastructure bills stuck in Congress, the supply chain buckling, and geopolitical tensions heating up, the "old economy" is roaring back with a vengeance.

Suddenly, we're talking about access to raw materials. Some of these - like rare earth elements - are simply necessary ingredients for the high-tech devices at the forefront of the world economy.

But what's really bringing the system screeching to a halt are the basic requirements of power... and we're seeing things that even some of the worst pessimists wouldn't have imagined.

I'm talking rationing, controlled blackouts, and even one entire country losing power altogether.

At a time like this, you need to turn to an expert. We have energy specialist Dr. Kent Moors to fill us in on the developing shale oil situation in the United States.

There's a lot happening with commercial space flight, remarkable advances in biotech, and even the promise of quantum computing.

Just remember... none of that matters if you can't keep the lights on.

Keep moving,
This week Chris discusses the seasonal trends in September and October with some strategies on how to keep winning even in the midst of market chaos.

For those of you struggling to make profits on your options trades in the current market, this is an absolute must-watch video.

WORD ON THE STREET
Panic At The Airport, Down With Debt, Past The Peak?

  • Winter Is Coming - Cautiously, ever so cautiously, some are suggesting that we might be past the peak of COVID-19, including the devastating "delta variant." In 45 states, new COVID-19 cases declined - with just Montana, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania moving in the wrong direction. Dr. Anthony Fauci said it was "good news" but warned against prematurely declaring victory. However, the real question is what will be the trend as we near flu season.

  • Does Anyone Buy This Press Release? - Southwest Airlines (LUV) has said that air traffic control issues and "disruptive weather" are responsible for massive flight delays and cancellations. More than 1,000 flights were canceled last weekend as frustrated travelers raged at airports or were left stranded. Some suspect that what is really happening is not "disruptive weather," but a shortage of pilots, some of whom may be resisting a vaccine mandate. However, though the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association filed for a temporary restraining order against the company's vaccine mandate, the organization said in a statement that "our Pilots are not participating in any official or unofficial job actions."
  • Let's Call The Whole Thing Off - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) decision to allow a temporary raise in the debt ceiling forestalled a catastrophic default. However, that hasn't solved the issue, as the government will need to come up with a solution by December. An increasing number of Democrats want to scrap the issue for good. House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth (D-KY) has joined Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in calling for the limit to be removed from Congress's control. He is supporting a bill to transfer authority over the debt ceiling to the Treasury Secretary.

  • Cutting Down On Optimism - So much for the second coming of the "Roaring Twenties." Goldman Sachs has cut forecasts for U.S. economic growth in both 2021 and 2022 because of a delayed recovery in consumer spending. 2021's estimate was slashed by a very small amount, going from 5.7% to 5.6%. However, Goldman Sachs sees economic growth declining from a previously projected 4.4% to just 4% in 2022. In other words, this might get worse before it gets better.

HOT SPOTS: What's Going on in Geopolitics

  • Austrian Chancellor Quits - Onetime conservative wunderkind Sebastian Kurz, 35, is stepping down as a corruption probe has taken down his government. Though he retains control over his conservative Austrian People's Party, his coalition partners in the Greens demanded his ouster. You might ask why the conservatives were reliant on the Greens. Well, that's because Kurz's previous partners in the nationalist Freedom Party were expelled by him after their own media scandal in 2019. One suspects there's some schadenfreude among Austria's far right over all this.

  • Lebanon Goes Dark - It's the kind of sight you would never expect in the modern world (well, outside North Korea). A fuel shortage led to Lebanon's two biggest power stations shutting down on Saturday. Though power was restored on Sunday, it's just the latest blow for a country that has seen its currency lose 90% of its value since 2019.

  • Xi: China Wants "Peaceful Reunification" With Taiwan - After repeatedly challenging Taiwan's air defenses over the last week, Chinese president Xi Jinping has called for "peaceful reunification" with Taiwan. Of course, that doesn't really settle the issue - if Taiwan doesn't want to be "reunified" with the People's Republic, what then? While China's leader has downplayed the possibility of military action, he left no doubt about his final goal. "The historical task of the complete reunification of the motherland must be fulfilled, and can definitely be fulfilled," he said yesterday.
CUTTING EDGE: What's Happening In Tech

  • Orlando, NASA To Work Together On Flying Cars - Well, it's about time. Orlando, Florida will be working with NASA to create an infrastructure for flying cars. This includes building the city's first "vertiport," which will be built by the German company Lillium. An Orlando transportation planning projects coordinator said that some operators are expecting to have passengers as soon as 2024-2025.

  • AI To Detect Eye Disease - AI's role within medicine continues to grow. An international team with scientists from Australia, China, and the United States (a small miracle in itself considering global politics) has built an AI retinal expert system called CARE. CARE will be rolled out in China to scan for retinal diseases and then use its initial data to further develop the platform.

  • Shatner Space Flight Delayed - It looks like Captain Kirk is going to have to wait a little longer. Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin was scheduled to take William Shatner into orbit on October 12. However, "anticipated winds" led to a decision to delay the flight. Shatner won't have to wait too long though - the new launch date is Wednesday, October 13.
"Captain's log, Stardate 10-11-21. I continue to marvel that whether humanity conquers the stars depends on Jeff Bezos's rivalry with Elon Musk."
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

"The increase in transit is not keeping up with the volume of new production."

We all know that the United States of America is no longer helpless when it comes to oil. Fracking and new ways of accessing crude has helped make the USA an energy producer rather than a power dependent on the whims of foreign nations. However, fracking doesn't come without cost... and one of the most important fields in the United States has a big problem. Energy expert Dr. Kent Moors breaks down the fascinating (and troubling) relationship between oil and that most innocuous of substances - water.
