Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... This top Pentagon official says ISIS-K could be capable of attacking us as soon as next year Colin Jahl is the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy — not exactly a household name, but definitely someone you'll want to listen to when he does speak. And what he had to say on Tuesday was disturbing enough to warrant anyone's undivided attention.
ISIS-K is the terrorist organization in Afghanistan that took credit for the Kabul suicide bombing in August. Kahl, speaking before the Senate Armed Services committee, said that although the group is incapable of attacking us right now, "we could see ISIS-K generate that capability in somewhere between six or 12 months." He added that al-Qaeda would take a year or two to rebuild that capability.
But just because they can doesn't mean they will. The estimates from the intelligence community are based on there being no intervention from the US or allies, Lt. Gen. James Mingus, the Director of Operations for the military's Joint Staff, told the hearing. "The goal would be to keep those time horizons where they are at now, if not even further," Mingus said.
What is the deal with the luxury space station proposed by Jeff Bezos? A new "mixed use business park" will soon be launched into space if Jeff Bezos has his way. Blue Origin recently shared its plan to build what is now being called the Orbital Reef station, which would be fully functioning in just a few years — between 2025 and 2030. Once it's up and running, it would accommodate almost a dozen people, rivaling the International Space Station. This project brings Bezos' dream of "millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth" closer to reality.
This announcement comes as Blue Origin faces increasing employee turnover amid rumors that the company is a "toxic" one to work for. As we reported previously, Bezos also faced a setback when NASA gave a lunar lander contract to SpaceX instead of him. He retaliated by suing NASA earlier this year. Despite this, Bezos is still planning on bidding for another of the agency's programs.
Though executives have yet to share how much the Orbital Reef station would cost. The project would involve a collaboration among Sierra Space, Boeing, Redwire Space, and Genesis Engineering.
"We're just beginning to understand the tremendous implications that microgravity research, development and manufacturing can mean, for not only exploring the universe and making discoveries but improving life on Earth," said an executive involved in the deal. "We are in a second golden age of space exploration and development."
DNA leads to couple being charged in death of infant 30 years after body discovered Nags Head is a quiet coastal town located on North Carolina's Outer Banks. It's not exactly the sort of place you'd expect much of anything to happen — but on April 4, 1991, a horrific crime was discovered.
Police responded to a report of human remains found in a rack that held trash cans. According to a release from police, when officers got to the scene, they found the body of an infant whose gender could not be established due to the body's advanced state of decomposition. The baby came to be known only as "Baby Doe."
A medical examiner autopsy determined that the child died by blunt force trauma to the face and asphyxiation. It's unclear how old the infant was at the time of death. And for 30 years, the perpetrators of this crime got away with it.
But in 2019, officers began a re-investigation and sent the infant's rib bone to a private lab in Woodlands, Texas, called Othram for forensic analysis. Othram was able to recover human DNA from the bone and used that hereditary material to conduct a genealogical profile, which eventually led officials back to a family in North Carolina.
