Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... 5 things to watch for as Biden heads to Europe President Biden left D.C. Thursday for his second presidential overseas trip. He's on his way to Europe for the Group of 20 summit in Rome as well as the United Nations climate summit, COP26. And at the COP26, Biden plans to press other countries to more aggressively tackle climate change, despite falling short of securing votes to pass his own climate agenda at home.
Press Secretary Psaki pointed out that "there are phones on Air Force One and in Europe" to reassure reporters that Biden would remain engaged with his domestic agenda, the Build Back Better plan. The plan is falling almost fatally short of Biden's expectations, and Democrats are still divided over it.
Controversies abound for Facebook, so the holding company changed its name When corporate chaos and controversy abound, what is a CEO to do? Just as Mark Zuckerberg, who recently rebranded the parent company that encompasses his suite of apps. As we've previously reported, former employee Frances Haugen leaked documents that paint a less-than-stellar view of the company. She said, for instance, that executives did nothing about its research clearly illustrating how harmful the social media app is to teens. Further, the leaked data suggest that the social media giant was having a difficult time addressing vaccine misinformation, despite saying otherwise.
But at Thursday's Facebook connect conference, those issues were nothing more than blips on Zuckerberg's radar. He seemed to allude to the negative coverage by saying: "The last few years have been humbling for me and our company in a lot of ways." But his focus was primarily on his vision for the "metaverse," which has been described as a new experience of the internet, blending augmented and virtual reality. He announced that Facebook's parent company will now be called "Meta," to reflect this new trajectory and focus. Some, of course, are critiquing his move to direct attention away from the public relations nightmare he is now facing.
Why the Afghan resistance is increasing its U.S. lobbying U.S. financial and military aid could be crucial to efforts to oppose Taliban rule in Afghanistan. But opposition forces must convince the Biden administration to stay engaged to some degree in a conflict from which the president is determined to extricate the United States.
A leading opposition group, the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, has registered to lobby U.S. policymakers, signaling it recognizes the need to win over key officials in Washington. The National Resistance Front is run by Ahmad Massoud, the son of the leader of the famed Northern Alliance, which was a major U.S. ally during the initial stages of the war in Afghanistan.
Massoud has tried to marshal military resistance to the Taliban since the U.S. withdrawal in August, to varying degrees of success. The last intelligence made available to the public showed the resistance forces holed up in Afghanistan's smallest province, Panjshir. The Taliban claims that it took Panjshir last month.
