Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... Derek Chauvin to appeal his conviction in the death of George Floyd Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for his involvement in the death of George Floyd, an incident that gained enough widespread media attention to propel the Black Lives Matter movement into national spotlight.
Chauvin was convicted on charges of second-degree murder after holding Floyd down with a knee on Floyd's neck in a restraint hold that has since been outlawed across the country. Chauvin was tried multiple times; however, he says that the conviction was unjust due to circumstances surrounding the media attention given.
What is the deal with all of the violence at fast-food joints? It seems like everywhere you turn, passengers, patrons, and people in general are becoming more and more aggressive. Each day, it seems, there is a new account of bad behavior in the skies or at the airports. And recently, that violence has spread to a variety of fast-food restaurants across the nation. Earlier this week, a patron at a Chipotle was so hangry she pulled out a gun from her purse when she was told that the understaffed store would be closing, and therefore unable to take her order.
Another employee attempted to help her in an effort to mitigate the woman's anger, but the customer continued to threaten the workers, saying: "Somebody better give me my food." She was able to get her meal, and it is unclear whether she paid, though it seems unlikely, given the circumstances. Authorities were asking for any witnesses to contact them about the case.
Also this week, a double murder and a suicide took place just outside a Wendy's restaurant, in the drive-thru area. A man followed a woman to the restaurant, struck her car, and then exited his vehicle and started shooting, according to authorities. And, in Philadelphia, an iconic cheesesteak shop has seen not one, but two deadly shootings outside that stemmed from heated arguments.
What do we know about the suspected nation-state hack that targeted a major U.S. port? The Port of Houston, situated on the Gulf Coast, is a vital piece of American infrastructure. And like other institutions in recent months, it was the target of another cyber attack. The port issued a statement on Thursday saying it had successfully defended against an attempted hack in August and "no operational data or systems were impacted."
Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Jen Easterly first revealed the attack on Thursday morning as she testified during a Senate hearing. The hearing took place in order for senators to press the Biden admin on the growing threats to our nation's cybersecurity. Easterly said she believed a "nation-state actor" was behind the hack, but did not say which one.
In case you missed it, this attack comes on the heels of several other disturbing hacks. One major example is the massive SolarWinds espionage campaign, which has been attributed to Russian hackers. The campaign broke into the email accounts of many prominent federal prosecutors; 80% of Microsoft email accounts used by employees in the four U.S. attorney offices in New York were breached.
Suspected Chinese state hackers targeted telecommunications giant Verizon and the United States' largest water agency over the summer. Security researchers say dozens of other high-value entities that have not yet been named were also targeted as part of the breach. Uncertainty surrounding what data is stolen is common in cyberattacks; it can take months to determine data loss, if it is ever discovered.
