Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - What to do with your feelings.
- I am reading my fourth book by the physicist Carlo Rovelli: Reality Is Not What It Seems is an expansion of his blockbuster, Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, which is where I'd start if you're unfamiliar with his work.
- I'm looking forward to reading Oliver Burkeman's new one, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. His last book, The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking was a big influence on my ideas about self-help.
- "Celebrity is a mask that eats the face."
- Eye candy: I'm getting into Jack Kirby. (I started with the Galactus stories from Fantastic Four.)
- Ear candy: in Ted Gioia's latest newsletter about lullabies, he recommended two lulling albums: Max Richter's Sleep and Jeff Bridges' Sleep Tapes.
- TV: I, too, have been sucked into the dark, perverse comedy of The White Lotus. (If that's too dark, but you'd still like to laugh while visiting a Hawaiian resort, I recommend one of my all-time favorite movies, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.)
- Podcast: Michael Azerrad discusses the legacy of one of my favorite books, Our Band Could Be Your Life. (A favorite story: Legs McNeil, co-author of Please Kill Me, another of my favorite music books, told him to skip the music and "write about the people.")
- RIP sports producer Gareth Hughes. I didn't know him personally, but he was a friend of a friend, and we chatted often on Twitter. He seemed like a real mensch with great taste, someone who was, as his obit says, "a big sports fan, but a bigger fan of life in general." My thoughts are with his family.
- Surprise helps you see.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. You can help it keep going: forward it to someone who'd like it, read my books, shop for some of my favorite gear (I get a cut), buy a t-shirt, or hire me to speak. If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here. xoxo, Austin PS. Thanks to my friend Ryan Holiday for carrying my books at The Painted Porch. What he and Sam are doing with the bookstore is inspiring! You can order from them here. | | | |
