A trope compendium for Gideon the Ninth
Dear book clubbers,
The snow today has started to melt down in messy, uneven little rivulets; it's still mostly there, but shaggy and untidy now. Early winter snow, the kind you get when the weather hasn't fully committed to itself yet.
This week we are at last talking about Gideon the Ninth, making this the day for which I have been low-key angling since Vox first began to plan a book club. One of the things I love about this book is how gleefully it swirls different genre tropes around, so for this week's discussion, I outlined a few of those tropes and why they work so well. You can read all about them and tell me what I missed here.
COMING UP THIS WINTER
There's no live event this month. Instead, we're doubling up at the end of January, with one live event featuring Tamsyn Muir herself(!) to cover both Gideon the Ninth and its sequel Harrow the Ninth. Here's what it looks like:
Friday, January 15: Discussion post on Harrow the Ninth
January 28, 12 pm ET: Our live Zoom event for both books with Tamsyn Muir. We'll send you an RSVP link as soon as we have it available.
THE WEEK IN BOOKS ON VOX
This week, I put together my list of the best books I read in 2020, including a few that we read together. If you do not see your favorite book or a book that you wrote on it, it is undoubtedly because I did not read it, not because it is bad.
Wishing you a joyful holiday, a swiftly vaccinated new year, and all the books you could ask for.
