The stock had spiked on solid news.  Was the FBI raiding the company's offices? Or was there some terrible news I'd missed?  Maybe the company was doing an offering way below the price where I bought?   All I knew was it was tanking. And it was tanking fast.  The price action was so crazy that all I could think was "I need to get out of this trade now."  Have you ever experienced a trade like that? If not, don't worry. Trade long enough and you will. It's almost inevitable.  The funny thing is, there was no emotion. There was zero sense of "Oh, maybe I should hold this to see what happens."  My reaction was 100% mechanical. Sell. Get out.  So I did. For a loss. As it turned out, it was one of my biggest losses in a while.  But I wasn't upset. As a matter of fact, I was happy with that trade.  That might seem counterintuitive — like so much in trading. But it's based on one thing.  What is it?  It's something that's instilled in us from a very young age. For better or worse, we test it. We test it with our parents and we test it in school.  We test this one thing pretty much throughout life. Sometimes it's painful, too.  In this way, I'm no different than most people… In high school, I took 20-minute bathroom breaks so I could do stock research in the library. I missed my college graduation because I was in a trade. (I regret that now.) Later, I lost $500K on a company I believed in.  Each of those is an example of me pushing to see how far I could go. I just didn't know it at the time.
