Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of December 4 - 10
PASSAGE OF THE WEEK:
Stoicism isn't supposed to be just words you look at on a page once. It's supposed to be something you carry with you—something you use to live. It's designed to become almost like a living toolkit, filled with things that protect and serve us each day. After all, that's what Enchiridion, Epictetus' famous work, translates to: something you keep at hand, a weapon you arm yourself with.
In a recent video on the Daily Stoic YouTube Channel, Ryan Holiday shares certain strategies the Stoics use to build mental strength and resilience. The Stoics knew that nobody was born with a steel backbone, but they understood that in order to find peace and happiness, we need to improve our mental strength day-after-day:
"Epictetus says, 'Me, I delight in my own improvement day-to-day.' His delight wasn't coming from money or fame or recognition or please — it was coming from getting better every day. It was from improving, it was from fulfilling his potential…. It was based on the inner work he could do on himself. It was knowing that he was becoming a little bit better, a little bit wiser, a little bit more self-controlled. That's where the Stoic finds joy and happiness and pleasure."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with author Kate Flannery on her new book Strip Tees: A Memoir of Millennial Los Angeles, the danger of relating your work to your identity, and their shared experiences working at American Apparel for CEO Dov Charney:
"If you had told me then 'You're in a cult', I would have said that this is my job. But, there were certain dynamics about it that were cult-y — and that felt good. Everyone's looking for a sense of purpose, especially when you're 23, and I think Charney really harnessed that. He created this 'Neverland' of young ambitious people that were still children in a sense, and still very easy to manipulate."

WHAT RYAN HOLIDAY IS READING:
"
First, create little goals for yourself. Don't worry about the big, broad stuff for now. Focus on making improvements and banking achievements one day at a time. They can be exercise goals, nutrition goals. They can be about networking or reading or getting your house organized. Start doing things you like to do or that make you proud of yourself for having completed them. Do those things every day with a little goal attached to them, and then notice how doing that changes what you pay attention to. All of a sudden you will find yourself looking at things differently.
