Postpartum

The Story

A new at-home pill could help fight postpartum depression.

Tell me.

Over the weekend, the FDA signed off on zuranolone — a once-a-day medication for postpartum depression taken over two weeks. It's the first-ever at-home treatment for a disease that affects about one in seven moms. In 2019, the FDA approved the treatment to be given through IV at hospitals. The DEA will need to clear the medication within 90 days before it can be made available for use at home with a doctor's prescription.

How does it work?

The drug involves administering a steroid that mimics the hormone progesterone, which can suddenly drop after birth. In trials, most women taking the pill saw a 50% or higher improvement in symptoms within a span of days. Still there are concerns: like how it will impact breastfeeding moms or barriers to access. The companies behind the drug haven't yet named the price.

An estimated 500,000 US women each year suffer from postpartum depression, which can account for up to 20% of postpartum deaths. This drug by itself will not solve the maternal health crisis in the US — but it may bring much-needed relief for some women experiencing the most acute symptoms.

And Also...This

What's been kicked out of the Women's World Cup…

The US. Yesterday, Sweden beat the returning champs 5-4 during a penalty shootout. The loss marked the end of Megan Rapinoe's shot at winning her third World Cup title. She was one of three players who missed their penalty kick. She called it a "dark comedy" and added, "this is the balance to the beautiful side of the game." It marks the first time the US women's national team walked out of the World Cup in the round of 16. Still, while the USWNT hung up their cleats, Simone Biles pulled out the chalk and returned to a competition for the first time in two years. She earned first place in vault, beam, and floor exercise, and third on the uneven bars. ICYMI: Here you go.

Where there's turmoil…

Pakistan. Over the weekend, former Prime Minister Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for corruption allegations. The court found him guilty of not declaring money from selling state gifts (although the verdict has been disputed). If upheld, this latest sentence could jeopardize his lead as an opposition figure. A law in Pakistan bars anyone with a criminal conviction from participating in politics for five years. Now, Khan is calling for nationwide protests.

Oh and… Yesterday, a train derailment killed 30 and more than 60 were injured. The train, which was going from  Karachi to Havelian, left dozens trapped. Authorities said an investigation was underway.

Who lost control…

Kai Cenat. Over the weekend, the Twitch streamer apologized after his PlayStation 5 giveaway at Union Square Park incited a riot. Thousands of his 6.5 million fans showed up in hopes of getting free consoles and other tech. Some of the attendees obstructed traffic and others jumped on cars. Police arrested 65 people, including Cenat, and charged him with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly without a permit. The streamer said he was "deeply disheartened by the outbreak."

Why swapping suits for slippers is worth it...

Hybrid work. Research has found that employees see work flexibility as good as an 8% raise. Workers say that respecting work-life balance is just as important as compensation. Remote control.

Who's facing allegations of antisemitism...

Jamie Foxx.

Who called it quits...

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick.
