It's the monthly jobs numbers today and they're not going to be pretty and will be possibly the tip of the iceberg as we head into May.

Good morning. Investors largely expect inflation to continue lower in the months ahead. While the most recent headline number was at 4 percent, expectations are for 3.8 percent in the coming month. That's a good sign overall. However, investors expect long-term inflation to move closer to 3 percent. That's the highest read since last March.

It's clear that we're not quite done wringing inflation out of the economy. And that moving too quickly to ease off of monetary tightening could lead to inflation moving higher than expected quickly.

Overall, the current decline is bullish. But markets may have also priced it in. Given this latest mixed signal, traders and investors alike should continue to expect a sideways move in markets over the coming weeks until a clearer signal emerges.

Today's TOP TIPS
Innovation Can Drive Profitability Higher
While most investors are focused on big tech names right now, conventional companies also benefit from today's tech trends. Companies that can integrate new technologies can provide better service, and potentially even keep costs down.

A company that has the lowest costs in the industry tends to have low profit margins. But it also has a big market share, as consumers are largely price-focused. That can still lead to great returns, especially as new technology improves profit margins.

IN OTHER NEWS
Home Prices Trend Higher

Even with interest rates at 15-year highs, home sales are trending higher. Supply remains tight, likely in part due to homeowners who have a low mortgage rate and don't want to pay more to potentially own a less valuable home. Overall, new listings are down 25 percent compared to a year ago.
Small Banks Likely to Consolidate

The best path forward for small and regional banks may be consolidation. The United States has thousands of small banks, which in total account for about half of total deposits. By combining forces, smaller banks could compete on a larger scale, without becoming part of an already "too big to fail" megabank.
Retailers Scaling Back on Free Shipping

Several merchants are scaling back free shipping offers as delivery costs continue to rise. That may include a higher price level at which free shipping kicks in, or a flat fee, such as the annual price of Amazon (AMZN) Prime membership. On average, the threshold for free shipping is at $64 this year, compared to $52 in 2019.
Modelo Tops Light Beer Sales in U.S. for Second Month

Modelo Especial has become the top-selling light beer in the United States for a second straight month, with 8.7 percent of overall beer sales. Bud Light, the prior leading beer brand, has slumped to 7 percent. Overall, Bud Light sales have fallen 28.5 percent, and Modelo has grown by 8.5 percent.

Privately-held streaming company Twitch is rolling out a Discovery Feed, along with several other new features designed to support short-form video content. That will allow the site to compete with other short-form content players such as TikTok.

Quote of the Day
We believe that the equity market is towards the higher end of our range of fair value estimates of valuations. So equity markets [are] certainly a little bit stretched… the fixed income market, on the other hand, [has] been inverted for over a year now at this point, so it's been calling for a recession for some time.
- Andrew Patterson, senior economist at Vanguard, on why the stock market may start to trade sideways in the coming months, following a big rally so far this year, and with the bond market warning on a recession.
