  • House Republicans nominated Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for speaker of the House, beating out a challenge from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). McCarthy fell far short of the 218 votes he needs on the House floor come January. Go deeper.

1 big thing: Tonight's beacon of hope

After multiple delays, NASA is set to launch its Artemis I mission in tonight's wee hours on a trip to circle the Moon, Axios Space author Miriam Kramer reports.

Why it matters: It will be the first launch of the huge Space Launch System rocket, which is a key component of the space agency's plans to one day return people to the surface of the Moon by 2025.

How to watch: The SLS is expected to take flight from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 1:04 a.m. ET.

2. Beyoncé ties Grammy record

Beyoncé received nine Grammy nominations today, tying her husband Jay-Z for the most Grammy nominations in history, Axios' Herb Scribner reports.

  • Zoom out: She is already the most victorious woman at the award show with 28 wins, AP reports.

Four wins would propel her past the late Hungarian British conductor Georg Solti, who has the all-time record of 31.

  1. The Pentagon said it couldn't corroborate media reports that two Russian missiles had landed in Poland, the N.Y. Times reports. Russia denied that any of its missiles landed in Poland.

  4. Walmart announced a $3.1 billion settlement framework to resolve all lawsuits lodged against it by local, state and tribal governments over the sale of opioids at its pharmacies. Go deeper.
