Like when I was trying to exit my first-ever six-figure winning trade…  I'd held the stock over the weekend. It was doing exactly what I wanted — slowly trending up during premarket trading. I refreshed my quote screen hundreds, if not thousands, of times as the market open approached.  By 9 a.m. I was up $70,000. That would more than double my previous largest gain. I was pulling my hair out. All I wanted to do was get out of the trade.  I even called my broker. The rep on the phone had to check with his manager to see if there was anything they could do.  I kept hitting refresh on my quote screen. Over and over again.  When the broker rep got back to me, he told me there was nothing they could do. I'd have to wait until the market opened before I could sell.  My impatience grew into outright frustration. I had two positions, so I called my other broker. The rep there took only seconds to give me the same news.  By then, fifteen minutes before the open, I was looking at a potential $90,000 win. For me, a middle-class kid from Orange, Connecticut, it was like a dream.  As the seconds ticked by and the market open got closer, I kept hitting refresh.  I set my sell orders up, but didn't submit them. If I didn't wait until 9:30, they would get rejected as premarket orders.  As soon as the market opened, I placed my orders. Nothing happened. By 9:40, I was getting worried. My orders still hadn't filled and trading volume had already passed the one-million share mark.  Then, in a matter of seconds, all my orders filled. It was crazy. The stock had kept spiking, and I'd banked $123,000.*  After the trade, I sat paralyzed in my chair for nearly 20 minutes. My gain on that one trade was more money than many highly-educated people earn in a year. And I'd done it from my dorm room. As a college freshman.  When I went to class later that morning, I swear I didn't hear a word uttered by the professor. All I wanted to do was celebrate.  When I told my roommate later, his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. I took three dozen fellow dormies out to dinner that night.    Looking back, I'm thankful my broker wouldn't let me sell.
