In a new episode on the Daily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday reveals 50 of the greatest lessons from Marcus Aurelius' Stoic masterpiece, Meditations, including those on avoiding false friendships, practicing moderation, and simply being indifferent:
"We always have the power to have no opinion. We don't have to decide that it's good or bad. We don't have to decide that it's urgent or not. Let the weather be the weather… We don't have to have an opinion on everything."
In the second of a two-part interview on the Daily Stoic podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with Matthew McConaughey on striving to be more involved, the importance of being close to those we love, and how selfless acts actually benefit ourselves:
"The most truly selfish people we can be are actually simultaneously being the most selfless… It starts to feed us back and serve ourselves…The really healthy ego is part and parcel with that caring for which we love the most, including ourselves."
"I had five things on my proverbial desk to tend to daily: family, foundation, acting, a production company, and a music label. I felt like I was making B's in all five. By shutting down the production company and the music label, I eliminated two of my five commitments with plans to make A's in the other three. I told my lawyer that I wanted to take care of my family, my foundation, and be an actor for hire. Simplify, focus, conserve to liberate. Alright, alright, alright."
