Ex-cop's road rage costs him job; QCPD head quits


After drawing flak for organizing an "inappropriate" press briefing for road rage suspect Wilfredo Gonzales, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III submitted on Wednesday his courtesy resignation to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr.


Hours later, the Supreme Court announced the dismissal of Gonzales as a coterminous employee of one of its associate justices.

Witness: Cop tried to make me a liar 


A Navotas police captain who led the botched operation that led to the killing of Jemboy Baltazar tried to induce an eyewitness to commit perjury, senators learned on Wednesday in their inquiry into the Aug. 2 incident. The witness, a companion of the slain teenager, said Police Capt. Mark Joseph Carpio tried to force him to include in his sworn statement that Baltazar was carrying illegal drugs and a firearm.

ANOTHER VIDEO CATCHES ARMED MOTORISTS—COP AND 'SOLDIER'—IN SCUFFLE

DISARMED Police Staff Sgt. Marsan Dolipas is caught on video pinning to the ground a motorcycle rider identified as Angelito Rencio after the latter allegedly sideswiped his car in Makati City on Aug. 25. The scuffle ended with Dolipas arresting Rencio and taking away his gun. 'Goring' worst to hit Iloilo since 'Frank'


ILOILO CITY—Mayor Jerry Treñas said Typhoon "Goring" (international name: Saola) was the "most severe" weather disturbance to hit the city since "Frank" (Fengshen) in June 2008. At least 90 of 180 barangays remained flooded as of Wednesday. "For the first time in Iloilo City, areas which were not previously flooded experienced intense flooding,'' he said. "We should study the situation seriously.''

A better ending to Naia privatization 


To cement its legacy in this field, the Marcos administration should craft a Solomonic decision that will ensure that the project would have acceptable terms for the private sector, while avoiding the onerous provisions that had bedeviled earlier privatization agreements. By changing the script, the latest version of the airport privatization story might yet have the ending that Filipinos deserve.
