To begin, congratulations are in order for the Spanish national team, who defeated defending champions Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday afternoon. España has now clinched its first World Cup since 2010, and I have fulfilled a lifelong dream of seeing multiple members of the Muppets perform “Seven Nation Army” live (if you missed the halftime show, it was an extremely chaotic but entertaining mish-mash of global stars that also included Kermit the Frog).

BRYSON, BRYSON, BRYSON: Outside of the World Cup, the other big storyline this weekend was that of the British Open and problem child Bryson DeChambeau, who had himself a controversial second round. In case you missed it: DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty after officials ruled that he improved his lie on the fifth hole by stomping down on the long grass behind his ball. … The firebrand golfer immediately defended his actions, and almost quit the tournament in protest. … Ultimately, though, he decided to continue for the weekend, even though he said he was “obviously disappointed” with the punishment, and ended up finishing tied for 14th (after some trolling, too, of course). … Scottie Scheffler stood up for him in the aftermath, while Rory McIlroy shared some honest (and unflinching) thoughts on the matter, as well. … For what it’s worth, our Andy Nesbitt is more inclined to side with McIlroy. … Here’s a look at the other winners and losers from Royal Birkdale, where Ryan Fox claimed the top prize.
HOOPIN: A bit of news from the basketball court. … For starters, Caitlin Clark had a history-making 45 points, 10 assists, four steals and two blocks in a win vs. the Storm on Friday, which also happened to be a career high for the 24-year-old. Good stuff. … And in the men’s league, the Hawks are trading former No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher to Dallas in a three-team deal that sends the Thunder’s Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard to Atlanta and three second-round picks to OKC. We have two lopsided games this evening, at least in terms of the WNBA standings. For the Aces and the Tempo, this will be a No. 3 team vs. a No. 10 team, and Toronto’s first game back since the controversy surrounding coach Sandy Brondello (who will be serving her suspension tonight). Later, we’ll see the No. 1 Lynx take on the dead-last Storm.
MLB:
Dodgers @ Phillies—7 p.m. ET; ESPN
Cardinals @ Angels—10 p.m. ET; ESPN
Over in the nationally-televised baseball world, we have the Dodgers and the Phils kicking off a three-game stand in the City of Brotherly Love, before St. Louis heads to the West Coast for a trio of tilts in L.A. Tune in.
