1 big thing: TikTok grows as a news source

This bar chart shows the types of TikTok accounts followed by U.S. adults, with the largest groups being mid-tier individual influencers or creators (46%), small accounts (38%), and organization and public figures (12%). Organization and public figures include mega influencers (6%), entertainers or celebrities (2%), and brand officials or company spokespersons (2%), as well as journalists, industry professionals, non-profit organizations, and politicians are followed by less than 1% each. The data comes from an analysis of 227,946 unique accounts collected from April 8–16 and June 14–20, 2024.
Data: Pew Research Center; Chart: Axios Visuals

A growing number of Americans get news from TikTok — but not by following journalists or news organizations, Axios Communicators author Eleanor Hawkins writes from a new Pew Research Center report.

  • Nearly half of Americans say they get news from social media platforms, according to Pew.
  • And 52% of TikTok users say they regularly get news from the app, up from 22% in 2020.

πŸ—ž️ But less than 1% of people Pew surveyed said they follow journalists or media entities on the platform.

  • When they're seeing news, they're usually getting it from content creators who reference current events.

πŸ’‘ The big picture: "It speaks to this broader notion that people's world news or politics comes as a side dish to their main course of gossipy entertainment news and the content of the creator that they happen to be interested in," said Aaron Smith, managing director of Pew Research Center's Data Labs.

2. 🎀 Harris' interview circuit

Vice President Harris said during an interview with ABC's "The View" today that "there is not a thing that comes to mind" when asked whether she would've done anything differently than President Biden.

  • "I've been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact," Harris said.

πŸ“Ί Driving the news: Harris is making several national media appearances this week, after largely avoiding questions from either the press or voters since becoming the party's presidential candidate.

  • What she's saying: Iran is the U.S.' greatest adversary, Harris said in a "60 Minutes" interview that aired last night.
  • "Iran has American blood on their hands, OK? This attack on Israel — 200 ballistic missiles. What we need to do to ensure that Iran never achieves the ability to be a nuclear power, that is one of my highest priorities," she said.

πŸ’¬ What's next: She also recorded an interview with Howard Stern and is scheduled to appear on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert."

  1. πŸŒ€Hurricane-related misinformation is getting in the way of on-the-ground Helene relief and preparations for Milton. "I worry that [people] won't apply for assistance, which means I can't get them the necessary items they need to support them," FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said. Go deeper.
  2. ⚖️ The Supreme Court seems likely to uphold the Biden administration's ban on "ghost guns." Go deeper.
  3. 🏈 The New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh after the team got off to a 2-3 start to the season, and amid apparent tensions with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, ESPN reports.
