🏈 Plus: First time in 64 years | Monday, October 14, 2024
| | | Presented By Instagram | | Axios PM | By Mike Allen · Oct 14, 2024 | Happy holiday Monday! Today's newsletter, edited by Donica Phifer, is 553 words, a 2-min. read. Thanks to Carlos Cunha for copy editing. | | | 🛫 1 big thing: Biden globetrotting | | Map: Danielle Alberti/Axios President Biden plans to visit South America and sub-Saharan Africa for the first time as president in his final weeks in office. - His overseas trips until now have largely been limited to Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, Axios' Dave Lawler writes.
Why it matters: Presidents' travels reflect their priorities. - 🌍 Biden came into office pledging to reinvigorate NATO and, in Asia, to strengthen U.S. alliances to counter China.
- 🛢His focus on the Middle East has been necessitated by circumstances, from rising oil prices to the war in Gaza.
🇦🇴 Biden would be in Angola right now, belatedly fulfilling a promise to visit sub-Saharan Africa. But the trip was delayed to deal with Hurricane Milton. The White House says it's working to reschedule the visit. - Biden is also expected to visit Peru next month for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference, followed by Brazil for the G20.
- He has visited Latin America only once as president — a trip to Mexico last year.
🔎 The intrigue: Biden hasn't visited China, unlike his three immediate predecessors. He did meet President Xi Jinping at APEC in the Bay Area last year. - Biden has traveled less than Presidents Obama, George W. Bush or Clinton did in their first terms — and thus far has visited the same number of countries (25) as President Trump.
- COVID made travel tough early in Biden's presidency.

Alabama and Virginia observe Columbus Day + another holiday besides Indigenous Peoples' Day.) Map: Axios Visuals States are split over whether to recognize today as Indigenous Peoples' Day, Columbus Day, both ... or neither. Why it matters: The divide is more than symbolic. It excavates deep-rooted tensions over the nation's identity and history, Axios' Delano Massey writes. - Some Native advocates see the rebrand as a symbolic gesture that still falls short of the progress needed.
- Others view replacing Columbus Day as disrespectful to Italian American heritage and a loss of cultural celebration.
Data: Census Bureau. Map: Alex Fitzpatrick/Axios The states with the largest Indigenous share of the population are Alaska, Oklahoma, New Mexico and South Dakota. - Photos: Today's celebrations of Indigenous cultures.
