The first trading day of the week is generally a rotation day, and boy did we ever see some serious rotation out of chip stocks… Here’s a chart of the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), and Nvidia (NVDA) is the biggest stock in this fund. Things don’t look good, and it’s down over 7.1% as of 3 p.m. ET! Nvidia (NVDA) is down 9.3%, with no buyers stepping in to stop the bleeding. I’m staying away from chip stocks until SMH catches a bid higher to around the $265 level, so make sure you stay out of trouble — I wouldn’t touch this thing with someone else’s money right now! As for the broad market and particularly the S&P 500 (SPY), I’m not quite sure if it’s ready to break down much lower, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t catch a bid back to $555, a level I didn’t expect to be broken this morning. But there’s hardly any follow through at current levels… That’s because volume is next to nil… With one hour left in the trading day, SPY volume was only 72% of its daily average, and less than half of what the average was just a month ago, and a third of what we saw back in February. So there is next to no institutional commitment in this market. With volume being this low, it’s really easy for an institution to bully the market. This means we have to be extra, extra careful. Coming into this morning, there were 398 stocks making 90-day highs. As of this afternoon, that number has fallen to just 148 — so the bulls have taken it on the chin since Friday… Finally, if you’re looking for strength, the Consumer Staples (XLP) sector is where you’ll find it! Check out all these tickers, many of which make up this sector… Roger Scott Roger Scott Trading Follow along and join the conversation for real-time analysis, trade ideas, market insights and more!
