Archetypal Intuition and The New Frontier of Mental Health (with Dr. Chris Palmer)
WHAT I'M WRITING ABOUT THIS WEEK
This week take all that you have learned regarding instinct, intuition, and insight and hone in on how you live these attributes through an archetypal expression. Knowing which archetype you are choosing to activate in different settings can give you guidelines to which ethics and values will be at the forefront of your words and actions. No matter what archetype you identify with, listening well will always be one of the most effective ways to be present to the truth in the present moment. Listening to your surroundings and the messages from within doesn’t just help you make strong decisions in sticky situations; it helps you find your purpose. It’s a key component to developing and living an uncommon life.
Episode #412 The New Frontier of Mental Health (with Dr. Chris Palmer)
Mental health has become a global crisis. Harvard psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Chris Palmer (@ChrisPalmerMD) is the Director of the Department of postgraduate and continuing education in McLean Hospital, and he's an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His research is leading the future of understanding, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. His recent book Brain Energy outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain.
Key Takeaways
Mitochondria and Brain Health: Genes get turned off or on primarily in relation to mitochondria. There has been an explosion of research on the tiny things in our cells and the benefits of addressing them for brain health. Mitochondria are the primary regulators of the metabolism, and brain disorders are being linked to metabolic disorders. Scientists are beginning to understand the role of the metabolism and mitochondria, and the role they play in mental health.
Individuals Brain Strength: Just like how each of us have certain muscles that are stronger than others, our brains are similar. Each of us have areas of the brain that are stronger or weaker. Once you locate the weak areas of the brain you can often retrain them and see amazing results in cognition and emotional functioning.
Ketogenic Diet, Lifestyle, and Brain Function: The ketogenic diet has amazingly profound impacts on the human brain. The ketogenic diet promotes metabolic health which positively affects the brain. The application of the Ketogenic diet paired with proper sleep, stress reduction, finding purpose, and exercise is a prescription that is working. However it isn’t a quick fix, it takes years of dedication and focus to see full remission in patients.
Medication is Limited: Although medication can be effective in treating the symptoms of a mental disorder there are limitations and many side effects. Dr. Palmer has dedicated his life’s work to finding better ways than the mainstream focus on medicating patients. He believes that although medication is necessary at times it is not the only route for treatment, and can be very limiting for overall recovery of mental health and brain disorders.
Soft War: A Novel Theory on Power Projection and the National Strategic Significance of Bitcoin by: Jason Paul Lowery is a high-definition, color-printed manuscript of an academic thesis written by Major Jason Lowery, an active-duty US Space Force astronautical engineer and US National Defense Fellow at MIT. Lowery presents a novel theory to the US Department of Defense that Bitcoin doesn't just represent a peer-to-peer cash system, it also (and more importantly) represents a new form of digital-age warfare that will transform national security, cyber security, and possibly even the base-layer architecture of the internet. This is a fascinating read that explores the topic of crypto currency using scientific, anthropological, and political theory.
WHAT'S INSPIRING ME
This episode is informative and exciting as it discusses the ability for psilocybin to assist in the brain's neuroplasticity. Benefits of Psilocybin on the Brain: As a veteran and the founder of The Courage Foundation, mental health and wellness is important to me. In the past few years psychedelics have been getting a lot of attention for their positive benefits on rewiring the brain. Understanding how something works always inspires and motivates me.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
PRACTICE OR HABIT TO TRY
Developing Inferential Intuition: Grab your journal and take a walk to a quiet place in nature. If you don’t live in a place where you can get lost in nature, any outdoor place where you can feel safe and relaxed will do. This is a two-part sensory exercise (auditory and visual) developing your inferential awareness.
Part 1: Start by box breathing for five or minutes. Start to walk, release all your other senses but your hearing, and just relax and listen to the sounds around you. Do this for five or ten minutes. Next, take your journal and write down everything you can remember about what you heard in your surroundings.
Part 2: On your way back, when you’re one or two blocks from home, look around and notice everything you can. On arriving at home, write down everything you saw in detail.Try doing this exercise three or four times over the next week so you can notice progress.
